Fresh 10 Weekly – Deeper Down Edition
I hope everyone has recovered from Thanksgiving weekend. I also hope you’ve been able to enjoy last week’s installment of The Ultimate Christmas Playlist so far.
What’s new this week? Well, this is actually a tough time for new music. Typically, there is very little released with the exception of holiday tracks and albums in November, December all the way through mid-January.
There are a couple reasons for this. For one, it’s because of the Recording Academy’s deadline for entry to the Grammy awards – “Nominations will be announced in all 84 categories on Wednesday, Dec. 5 and will honor recordings released between Oct. 1, 2017 and Sept. 30, 2018.” Many artists do not want to release too much music this early in the season ahead of the Dec 5, 2019 nominations for the following year. They’re afraid their music will fade out too soon, losing steam by the end of next season.
The other reason is the more obvious one. It’s more about the economics. The main focus for Record Labels during this time of year is pumping out as many holiday themed collabarations, duets, songs, albums, etc. because it is such a huge moneymaker for them in a very short period of time. With that being said, there will still be some new music released in December, just barely enough to notice though. But, rest assured, I’ll pick up on it as they do and get it to you.
Alternatively, for this week and probably going forward through mid-January I introduce to you my Fresh 10 Weekly – Deeper Down Edition. It will include many great tracks from “deeper down” my song library. While the songs may have been released in the past, they are mostly from earlier this year. So, they’re still pretty fresh. On this introduction to the new playlist I’ve included 25 songs to start with.
I hope you enjoy it and as always please send me your feedback. Tell me your thoughts on where I can improve. What are your likes? Dislikes? What would you like to see more of? Trust me, I’m all ears. 😉
In other news, my Fresh 10 – Michael’s Weekly Picks of Some Excellent New Music You May Have Missed… will now be just simply called Fresh 10 Weekly and I will be forwarding everything to it’s own dedicated website! I’ll keep you posted on the launch date. Hopefully, it’ll be with next week’s picks. All the playlists will still be available on Spotify as usual.

Fresh 10 Weekly – “Time to Put Up the Christmas Tree Momma” – The Ultimate Christmas Playlist
Thanksgiving is a day filled with praise, gratitude and of course great food. It’s a day we join our friends and family to share the tradition year after year. On this day of thankfulness and sharing, I would like to share another tradition with you that my family has been practicing for generations.
After the smoke clears and we recover from Thanksgiving day, another wonderful tradition begins. Getting ready for Christmas.
This was a whole day and night affair.
“Time to Put Up The Christmas Tree Momma” I’d say, while grabbing my Mother’s hand to lead her to the door. “Yes dear, it is” and now it was time to go find us a beautiful, living tree at one of the many corner lots where there were rows and rows of beautiful smelling trees to choose from. The aromatic pine smells were the welcoming greeting we’d receive everytime we pull in. Piling out of the car, my Father, Mother, myself and my little Brother would all race to find this year’s perfect tree. After it’s purchased and secured to our car, we roll out and head home to start the festivities.
My Father brings the tree into the house, with some very mild help from my brother and I, then heads to wherever the ornaments were stored last year. My Mother alternatively heads to the kitchen to start making her famous, made from scratch, hot cocoa in a big pot. While my brother waits impatiently next to her side, I get summoned from my Father to help carry the small crates of Christmas decorations or at least whatever I was strong enough to carry at the time.
When the homemade cocoa was piping hot and ready, she would fill our Santa cups and top off with marshmallows. Then load them up on a tray and meet us in the living room where the tree stood there bare in its stand.
After everything Christmas related we owned was sitting in the living room my Father would sit in his chair and grab his guitar. Started to stru the strings and sing a Christmas song. As we listened, tapping our feet, and drinking our cocoa, I’d look around to see each of us having smiles that stretched from ear to ear and we start to sing along. A while later, his music playing would transition to the record player. We’d sing and dance around the tree putting up all the Christmas decorations and ornaments. Spinning records all night till we were all finished and tuckered out.
The Christmas season has now begun for this family.
Coming from a very musically inclined family, no tradition, holiday, or festivity was ever carried on without music either played in person or played from the stereo (usually both). My Brother and I still carry on the tradition today, hoping we pass it on to our children, and later to their children.
So without further ado, I offer you The Ultimate Christmas Playlist – 46 carefully chosen Christmas themed songs from a mixed bag of Old Standards, Americana, R&B, Motown, New Age, Jazz, Folk, Rap, and Alternative artists I’ve listened to over the past 40+ years.
Whether you already have your traditions in place or want to start a new one, I hope this playlist will compliment your Christmas music collection this season and many more to come. After all, it is truly “The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year”.
With peace and love from my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas.

Fresh 10 Weekly
I’ve been asked a number of times if Indie music is the same as Alternative music. While there is a huge majority of Alternative and Folk music listed on Indie Labels, it is not. You’ll find just about every genre on an Indie Label. It’s because Indie artists are usually more experimental and diverse, many are labeled Alternative in some form or fashion. Instead of the Big Label formula driven, cookie cutter music designed for mass appeal.
Indie is short for Independent Label, meaning it is many times self-financed and/or self-produced by the artist. Or the artist may just be signed to a smaller record label like my own “Troubadour Tunes”, which doesn’t typically follow the same contractual guidelines as the larger companies do. Think Sony, Columbia, RCA, and so on. The Indie labels are usually much more in the favor of the artist making money and giving the artists more creative control over their records and albums.
Which brings up the next question I hear a lot, “What is the difference between a record and an album?” Even though most of us grew up calling those black discs in a sleeve a record (I still do) they are actually albums. A record is, exactly that, a recording of any kind of music (song), instrumental, even comedy or narratives as a singular unit. Although the latter two are more commonly referred to as tracks, that is a whole other question for another time.
Ok, on with this week’s “Fresh 10 – Michael’s Weekly Picks of Excellent Music You May Have Missed”.
You guessed it, it’s all Indie. (well almost)
I hope you enjoy them and remember I always welcome feedback and questions! The full playlist is also on Spotify as Fresh 10 Weekly. Be sure to follow it for automatic weekly updates.

Fresh 10 Weekly
This week’s picks will be focused on female singers. For the last couple of years, there has been a huge influx of female-led groups and singer/songwriters. Now, in my opinion, they aren’t all welcomed to my lists because some are just too whiny. Not a big fan, but where credit is due there are many quality and beautifully sung compositions by the leading ladies. I hope you’ll enjoy my representations here.
